Installing SQL Server 2008

Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Express with Advanced Services (SQL Server 2008 Express) is a free, easy-to-use version of SQL Server Express that includes a graphical management tool and powerful features for reporting and advanced text-based searches. SQL Server 2008 Express provides powerful and reliable data management tools and rich features, data protection, and fast performance. It is ideal for small server applications and local data stores.

32-bit systems
Computer with Intel or compatible 1GHz or faster processor (2 GHz or faster is recommended. Only a single processor is supported.)

You can check your computer to see if it is 32-bit or 64-bit by opening the Start Menu, right-clicking on "Computer" (or "My Computer") and select properties. A window will appear displaying information about your computer and the version of Windows you're using. If you're using Windows Server 2008 or Vista, you will see either 32-bit or 64-bit Operating System as the "System type". In previous versions of Windows, if you have a 64-bit version, it will say so underneath the Windows version. Whereas if you only see the Windows version and no indication of 32-bit or 64-bit, then you have a 32-bit operating system installed.
Before installing SQL Server 2008 Express, you will need to have the following prerequisites installed:

1. Download SQL Server 2008 Express with Advanced Services. There are two files available, although you only need to download the file that is appropriate for your computer.
| • | Download "SQLEXPRADV_x64_ENU.exe" if you will be installing SQL Server Express on a 64-bit computer. |
| • | Download "SQLEXPRADV_x86_ENU.exe" if you will be installing SQL Server Express on a 32-bit computer. |
2. Select Save and save the file to your desktop or a different location that is convenient. The files are over 500 MB and depending on your connection speed, it may take a while for the download to finish.
| 1. | After the download is complete, navigate to where you saved the file and double-click the file to start the SQL Server install. |
| 2. | If prompted, click Run to continue. A progress bar will be displayed as the installation is prepared. |

| The SQL Server installation will start after the installer prepares the necessary files on your computer. |
| 3. | After the installation is prepared, the SQL Server Installation Center will appear. Select the System Configuration Checker to launch a simple tool that checks for conditions that could prevent SQL Server from installing correctly. |
| 4. | The System Configuration Checker will check multiple conditions of your computer and if all rules successfully pass, click OK. If you have any rules that fail, click the blue, underlined word Failed for more information as to why the rule failed and what needs to be done in order to fix the problem. |

| 5. | After successfully running the System Configuration Checker with all rules Passed, select Installation on the left on the SQL Server Installation Center main screen. Then choose the New SQL Server stand-alone installation or add features to an existing installation option to start the installation process. |
| 6. | The installer will check several more rules before continuing. If all rules pass, click OK to continue. |
| 7. | Click Install to install the Setup Support Files. These files are necessary for SQL Server installation. |
| 8. | After the Setup Support Files are installed, additional rules will be checked. |
| 9. | Select the Perform a new installation of SQL Server 2008 option and click Next > to continue. |
| 10. | If you were installing the Standard, Workgroup or Enterprise Edition of SQL Server, this is where you would enter the license key. Click Next > to continue to the next step. |
| 11. | Check I agree to the license terms if you agree to the license terms and click Next > to continue. |
| 12. | Select the features of Microsoft SQL Server to install and click Next > to continue to the next step. |

| 13. | Select Named Instance and enter CALLDATA for the name of the instance. Then select Next > to continue. |

You can specify any instance name you want, although CALLDATA is recommended for clarity. |

| 14. | The installer will check to make sure enough space is available on your hard drive to install SQL Server. If you have sufficient space available, click Next > to continue with the installation. If you do not have sufficient space available to install SQL Server, you will need to free up additional space on your hard drive or install SQL Server on another computer before you can continue. |

| 19. | The installer will check several more rules again and if all rules pass or are not applicable, click Next > to continue. Any rules that fail will cause the install to stop. All rules must pass in order to continue with the installation. |
| 20. | This screen will review the configuration for the SQL setup. Click Install to start the installation. |
| 21. | The progress of the installation will be displayed on the status bar. this may take a while depending on the performance of your computer. |
| 22. | After the installation is complete, the installer will inform you as to whether the installation has completed successfully or failed. If the install has failed, additional information will be provided on this screen. |
| 23. | After successfully installing Microsoft SQL Server 2008, you should ensure that you have the latest software updates with Microsoft Update. |
